You Can't Topple van Poppel!

Danny van Poppel looked unstoppable in the final metres of Stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse but a dangerous right turn 150m before the finish line nearly toppled him. 

Van Poppel demonstrated his excellent bike handling skills when he almost crashed into race leader Peter Sagan on sharp bend during the final sprint to Champagne, averting a potentially devastating pile up.

David Millar to Appear at Eroica Britannia

With only a few days to go before the much anticipated 2016 edition of Eroica Britannia, festival goers were excited at the prospect of attending an evening with David Millar at the vintage bike extravaganza and ride in Bakewell, Derbyshire.

Maserati have come on board as the ‘presenting partner’ and will be hosting drinks and a Q&A with the former professional rider, author and TV presenter, famous for winning the leader’s jersey of all three Grand Tours.

Aviva Women's Tour

The Aviva Women's Tour is almost upon us - five days of spectacular cycling around the glorious British countryside with the sport's biggest names taking part.

Lizzie Armitstead and Marianne Vos head up the provisional rider list and will be battling it out alongside defending champion Lisa Brennauer of Canyon/SRAM. World number one Emma Johansson of Wiggle HIGH5 and top sprinter Kirsten Wild will also be ones to watch, with 15 of the world's top 20 riders in the UCI rankings down to start.

Tomorrow sees the start of Bike Week, organised by Cycling UK. Bike Week is actually more than 10 days of nationwide activities designed to get people pedalling. From Dr Bike maintenance to buddy and social rides there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Bike Week was launched on Wednesday with a parliamentary bike ride from the Danish Embassy to Westminster.

"Beep" off to the Mayor!

Fed up with getting cut up, strung up and stressed out on the city's streets? The London Cycling Campaign is giving cyclists the opportunity to alert the Mayor every time we feel unsafe on the roads. 

Teaming up with Swedish company Hovding, the LCC is giving away 500 free 'Flic' buttons for bicycles. Next time an HGV runs you off the road, press the button and Mayor Sadiq Khan will receive a message giving your location and a reminder of his pre-election LCC's Sign for Cycling commitments.

Third Cyclist Killed in a Month

Cycle safety campaigners will stage another "die-in" on Friday night to keep up pressure on the new London Mayor after a third cyclist was killed in less than a month.

Father of three, Dan "Cash" Stephenson was an experienced BMX cyclist. He was hit by a Routemaster bus on Saturday while out on a charity ride in Aldwych and died in hospital on Sunday night.

Headbutting at the Dauphiné!

Stage 1 of the Critérium du Dauphiné practically ended in a punch sprint rather than a bunch sprint yesterday! Riders jostling for position who risked wiping out in the final metres of the race included Chris Froome and Nacer Bouhanni, who narrowly won the stage from Jens Debusschere and Sam Bennett.

The race to the French village of Saint Vulbas saw head-butts between Katusha rider Alexander Kristoff and Nacer Bouhanni of Cofidis.

Tinkov's Instagram Outburst

Oleg Tinkov, sponsor of team Tinkoff Saxo, used an Instagram photo of himself next to his private jet to criticise the way pro cycling is funded. Russian Tinkov, posted the rant this morning to justify his decision to pull out of the team after ploughing millions of Euros into professional cycling since 2006. His wallet has made Tinkoff one of the most powerful teams in the peloton and employs superstars, Alberto Contador and world champion Peter Sagan.

Critérium du Dauphiné 2016

With the Tour de France just four weeks away, the start of the Critérium du Dauphiné this weekend will be a good gauge on what sort of form the main players are in. Held in France, the eight stage race from 5th to 12th June features Alpine mountains, flat and rolling stages as well as time trials that will see the GC contenders of the Tour trying to impose themselves and intimidate their rivals.

This has traditionally been a good race for Team Sky with four wins in the last five years, and an early indicator of good form.

London Nocturne Returns Tomorrow for its 10th Edition

The Mr Porter London Nocturne returns to our capital city’s streets tomorrow and will celebrate its 10th anniversary on a new night circuit in the heart of the City. The organizers say that the course is bigger with more space for the riders, spectators and attractions making this event better than ever.

We’ll be cheering on the LIOS team in the Folding Bike Race but have sadly had to turn down the invitation to take part in the Penny Farthing Race due to injury.

The Peloton That Got Lost

Take pity on poor Ukrainian rider, Oleksander Sheyduk, who was the only rider to take the correct route on Wednesday’s Tour of Ukraine. Sheyduk was on a solo breakaway and was the only rider to cross the line as the following peloton took a wrong turn inside the final 20km.  Cycling Weekly reported that his victory was taken away from him as the commissaire cancelled the stage and put in place a 5km lap to decide placings instead.

Local rider Sheyduk, had waited six years for a victory.

Halfords and Laura Trott Team Up

Halfords have announced the launch of a new range of women’s bikes in partnership with Olympic track cyclist, Laura Trott. She follows former Olympic champions Victoria Pendleton, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Boardman in partnering the motoring and cycling retailer.

The bikes will be available in July and will include three road bikes and one hybrid with prices starting at £499.

Rio Velodrome Fears

Fears were raised this week about the completion of the velodrome in time for the Rio Olympics when the city government cancelled its contract with Tecnosolo, the company constructing it.

 

The velodrome is the most delayed of Rio’s Olympic venues. An indoor cycling test event scheduled for April had already been cancelled because it wasn’t ready.

Sugar Fix for Giro Riders

24 year-old IAM cyclist rider Larry Warbasse made a few new friends on Saturday when he handed out out €30 worth of sweets to pro riders at the Giro d’Italia.

The American cyclist is training in the area and posted on Twitter: “The last climb of the giro passes the apt I’m staying at up at altitude. Thought what I would want on the last climb of the race so I decided to go out and buy €30 worth of candy bars to pass out at the top.

Nibali wins Giro

Congratulations to Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali for becoming one of only six riders to win all three of the Grand tours when he won this year’s Giro d’Italia. He snatched victory off Esteban Chaves by 52 seconds, while Valverde clawed his way onto the podium in third place.

Nibali was nearly pulled out of the race by his team, Astana, when he showed poor form in last Sunday’s mountain time trial.
