Alfredo Binda 1902 – 1986
Nicknamed "Trombettiere di Cittiglio" ("The Trumpeter of Cittiglio") Alfredo Binda began his cycling career when he was enticed by the 500 lire King of the Mountains prize on the Ghisallo climb of the Tour of Lombardy in 1924. He rode from Nice to Milan to get to the start and promptly won the coveted prize.
He is best known for winning the Giro d’Italia a record five times. Such was his dominance that the Gazzetta dello Sport offered him 22,500 lire to miss the 1930 edition.
After retirement he went on to coach the Italian team and had to mediate between Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali when they rode together.
